"Daring greatly means the courage to be vulnerable. It means to show up and be seen. To ask for what you need. To talk about how you’re feeling. To have the hard conversations.”
- Brené Brown
Healing and empowerment through therapy
Our pasts can often impact our present experiences, and even though we are no longer living in the past, it can feel like we are. Beliefs and behavioral patterns formed throughout our lives and spiritual, emotional wounds sustained in our histories can all influence our present and contribute to a host of distressing experiences. Anxiety, depression, addiction, and other responses/developments often make a lot of sense when we acknowledge that our historic wounds remain unhealed and accept that there is probably a good reason why we are holding onto our old ways of coping so tightly. I believe in giving the “symptom” the credit it’s due by acknowledging how our coping skills, maladaptive or otherwise, allow us to avoid negative feelings and/or connect with positive feelings. Perhaps the ways we used to tend to our wounds in the past worked in some ways, but the inherent drawbacks seem to be taking center stage today; they are taking us further from our goals, lead to hurt relationships and self-destructive patterns, and deepen emotional and spiritual pain in the long run.
If this pattern feels familiar to you, know that you are not alone. It is entirely realistic and possible for you to connect with your honest, authentic self and experience the confidence and empowerment you have been looking for. By harnessing your unique strengths, we can work together to practice skillful navigation of life challenges and make steps towards the fulfillment of your goals. You have the ability and capacity to enact positive change and healing in your own life, your meaningful relationships, and your community at large.
Therapeutic modalities and who I work with
The main theories of counseling I use in session are Adlerian (also called Individual Psychology) and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), and I am happy to utilize a blend of approaches and strategies to best meet your needs. In addition to my personal counseling practice, I work in community mental health and have experience working with diverse populations, including a variety of gender identities and sexual orientations, racial/ethnic backgrounds, and religious and spiritual attunements. I have found that some approaches may work really well for some folks and may be a poor fit for others, so I have developed flexibility and adaptability within my therapeutic modalities to meet people where they are at.
My hope is to collaborate with individuals in session in getting to the heart of their personal challenges, not to only manage secondary symptoms. I aim to work towards goals we agree are tangible, helpful, and realistic, and my greatest desire is to empower therapy participants so that they can continually grow and heal in their lives after they reach the end of therapy. I am particularly passionate about working with those who wish to increase their emotional awareness and deepen their understanding of their emotional responses. I have really enjoyed working with highly sensitive people who wish carve out healing spaces and practices for themselves and folks whose discomfort with self-acceptance causes them to be trapped in vicious cycles of low self-esteem and people-pleasing behaviors. It has been a privilege to work with individuals learning to cultivate healthy relationships with others through prioritization of mutual respect, cooperation, and boundaries. I emphasize the importance of self-discovery and healing through root work and lifestyle exploration and view all people through a holistic lens, not a Western lens of pathology. If you wish to deepen your understanding of self and others and to feel more at home and fulfilled in your life and relationships, I would be honored by the opportunity to work with you.
